Nintendo will beat Google in deploying nationwide free Wi-Fi, but those Wayport-powered hotspots will only offer connections for Nintendo DS systems.
Wi-Fi provider Wayport and Nintendo will have free hotspots in 6,000 McDonald's restaurants across the US, and Nintendo DS owners can use them to play games via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, IGN.com reported.
The Nintendo DS has built-in wireless support. A number of new games that can take advantage of online play will be released this year. Launching a supported title in wireless mode while at a hotspot-equipped McDonald's will get a gamer online without additional setup.
Official information should be available online in the US on November 14 and Europe on November 25. When the Nintendo Revolution console launches in the future (no firm date has been disclosed) it will also be able to connect to Nintendo's network via a wireless connection.
So far Nintendo has said its online service will be free. Microsoft charges for its Xbox Live online gaming, and will push two levels of membership, Xbox Silver and Xbox Gold, after the Xbox 360 launches in November.
